The diagram below is a typical curriculum. Rotations may vary for the individual resident.

- Clinical Base (CB) 12 months are shaded darker
- ICU- 1,2 and 4 (CTV ICU)
- ICU- 3 (Neurosurgical ICU)
- IC-Anesth: Intermediate Clinical-Anesthesia is an example of increased and graded responsibility where an attempt will be made to provide this resident more advanced OR cases with appropriate faculty supervision. This may include thoracic, vascular, major abdominal (i.e. Whipple), neuro and pediatric cases
- EBM: Evidence Based Medicine-Directed by Dr. Rebel.
- International Medicine: An elective of 1-2 weeks in international medicine is available to PGY4 residents (and PGY3 residents if acceptable to Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Schell)
- Osteopathic Physicians: Must have ER, Family, 2 internal medicine, 1 General Surgery; All must be completed in first 18 months of training. [Reference Dr. Salles]
- CB Selective:
- Choose from: in-patient Internal Medicine, Surgery, or Pediatrics
CA 3 Electives:
- At the discretion of the program director, up to six months of the CA-3 year may be outside of the operating room of UK or Shriner’s hospitals.
- ≥6 months of the CA-3 year is to be in operating room rotations at UK or Shriner’s hospitals. (excluding electives in: Chronic Pain, Acute Pain, Safari, PACU/Airway, Preop Clinic, “resident as supervisor”, or ICU).
- No subspecialty rotations are to exceed 3 months in total duration during the CA-3 year except following a meeting with and then approval by the program director and subspecialty head.
- Research: Those residents selecting research rotations will be assigned to UK OR 1 (ONE) day/week on average to maintain clinical skills and will be integrated into the weekend (Sat) call schedule. Research proposal must be OKed by Dr. Sloan and Dr. Schell in advance.
- ”Resident as Supervisor-Transition to Practice”: Qualified CA-3 residents may choose up to 2 months (continuous or divided) of elective in a supervisory role in the UK OR. These two months do not count towards the required ≥6 months UK OR requirement. Eligibility: minimum of 4 months UK OR prior to eligibility, “good academic standing”, In-training examination score as CA-2 ≥50th percentile. No night or weekend call required and internal UK-OR moonlighting is acceptable during rotation.
