The Shriners Hospital provides specialized care to children of all ages. Anesthesia is provided in the 2-room operating suite with emphasis on perioperative pain management.
Following completion of their PGY-1 year, residents will have a minimum one-month rotation as either a PGY-2 or PGY-3 at the Lexington Shriners Hospital for Children (SHC). In general, residents return for an additional one or two month rotation as a PGY-4 (CA-3). Goals and objectives for CA-3’s, besides including a deeper understanding and greater responsibility than PGY-2/PGY-3 requirements below, closely match those goals for CA-3’s at the University of Kentucky (attached as an addendum). After completing their PGY2/3 rotation at the SHC, residents will successfully be able to:
- Properly evaluate and prepare patients and their caregivers for surgery, to include taking a History and Physical, and preparing patients and caregivers both psychologically and pharmacologically as indicated.
- Conduct appropriate, safe perioperative anesthetic care in pediatric patients having elective orthopedic surgery.
- Recognize appropriate courses of action for perioperative critical events encountered in pediatric orthopedic surgery.
- Understand the differences in a small freestanding hospital and its relationship to the University of Kentucky Hospital.
