Course Description: This clerkship is designed for the seniorĀ medical student to gain cognitive and motor skills in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, management of acute respiratory and circulatory problems, and acute and chronic pain management. Specific objectives are for the student to:
- Learn pertinent issues in pre-operative evaluation
- Become skilled in airway management
- Progress toward performing a simple general anesthetic
- Experience applications of cardiac physiology
- Learn about obstetric analgesia
- Become familiar with concepts in acute and chronic pain management
- Effectively utilize invasive monitors
Evaluation Method: Written exam contributes 30% to the final grade. The balance comes from evaluation of clinical performance in the OR. Duration: Four weeks Max. Number of Students per Period: 4 (except with special permission) Prerequisite: Promotion to Fourth Year Report To: After training and orientation with Renee Seidel, visiting students report to Medical Student Coordinator in N-225 (first day only). For UK students, first day instructions will be provided by Medical Student Coordinator approximately one week before the first day of rotation.
