Overview
The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky offers a one year fellowship in Critical Care Medicine.  In April 2010, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) gave the program a three-year accreditation (the maximum number of years for initial accreditation).
Anesthesiology critical care medicine is a subspecialty of anesthesiology devoted to the acute care of critically-ill patients with multiple organ system derangements.  The fellowship consists of 12 months of full-time training beginning after satisfactory completion of a core anesthesiology residency program.  Anesthesiology critical care medicine fellows will spend ten months of training in the care of critically-ill patients in the intensive care units with the remaining time spent in research activities relevant to critical care or other elective rotations appropriate for critical care medicine fellows.    The program is structured to provide optimal patient care while providing the fellow the opportunity to develop skills in clinical care and judgment, teaching, administration, and research.  The University of Kentucky offers an in-depth and diverse exposure to a wide variety of clinical training in settings involving adult and pediatric patients necessary for the development of broad clinical skills required for a sub specialist in critical care medicine.
